CHAPTER 26
Iâd started contemplating what I wanted room service to bring Presley and I for lunch when the phone rang.
âEvelyn Murphy,â I chirped into the receiver.
âHey,â Mac said. âI found something,â
âOoo!â I sat down and crossed my legs. âYou found something when I sent you to talk to Mr. Hall. What on earth was he hiding in his black-and-white jumpsuit?â
He chuckled. âNo. He sent me on a goose chase. At least, I think he did. What I found doesnât make sense to me, but maybe itâll make sense to you. Can you come over?â
âCome over?â I fiddled with the pendant around my neck. âLike, to Yonkers?â
âYes. To Yonkers. That is where I live.â
The fiddling became pulling. I clutched the silver portrait of Saint Anthony tight in my fingers. âWhy donât you come here? Better yet, why donât you tell me what you found over the phone? I canât handle the suspense, Mac.â
âThatâs the thing. I donât know what it is I found. Well, I do know what it is, but I donât know how it helps him at all. Besides, I canât go to the Pinnacle, remember? Mr. Sharpe made it crystal clear I wasnât welcome on the premises.â
âBut itâs my hotel,â I said. âIf I want you to come over, what is Mr. Sharpe to do about it?â
âRing the police, probably,â Mac replied.
I rolled my eyes. âSo what?â
âSo, I left the station of my own free will, and Iâd like to not go back there on someone elseâs whim.â
Huffing, I acquiesced. âFine. Tell me what you found.â
âA book,â he said. âHallâs high school yearbook. I think thatâs what he wanted me to get. He talked in riddles, Evelyn. Iâll explain everything when you get here. You want the address?â
I copied his address down on a nearby pad of paper. Then I rolled the pen cap between my lips. âBut how do I get there, Mac? Do I take a taxi? Do taxis go all the way to Yonkers?â
âIf you got cash,â Mac said, âtheyâll take you wherever you want to go. Or you could try the subway.â
âThe subway?â I about fell off my chair. âI should think not! Can you imagine? This dress on the subway!â
âI donât know what dress youâre wearing. But no, youâre right, I canât picture you in the subway. So give the driver my address, and Iâll see you soon.â
He hung up on me. He hung up on me!
I stared at the phone in shock, not ready for the conversation to be over. I felt as if Iâd lost an argument.
I had to go to Yonkers? On my own? On a Wednesday?
My stomach growled. I hadnât even eaten yet!
I slammed the receiver down and hopped off the stool. Presley was a better clock than anything I wore around my wrist. He always knew when it was time to eat and was hot on my heels while I rifled through the pantry.
âDonât have time to order food today, Presley. Looks like peanut butter and jelly for me and a can for you.
