CHAPTER 26

I’d started contemplating what I wanted room service to bring Presley and I for lunch when the phone rang.

“Evelyn Murphy,” I chirped into the receiver.

“Hey,” Mac said. “I found something,”

“Ooo!” I sat down and crossed my legs. “You found something when I sent you to talk to Mr. Hall. What on earth was he hiding in his black-and-white jumpsuit?”

He chuckled. “No. He sent me on a goose chase. At least, I think he did. What I found doesn’t make sense to me, but maybe it’ll make sense to you. Can you come over?”

“Come over?” I fiddled with the pendant around my neck. “Like, to Yonkers?”

“Yes. To Yonkers. That is where I live.”

The fiddling became pulling. I clutched the silver portrait of Saint Anthony tight in my fingers. “Why don’t you come here? Better yet, why don’t you tell me what you found over the phone? I can’t handle the suspense, Mac.”

“That’s the thing. I don’t know what it is I found. Well, I do know what it is, but I don’t know how it helps him at all. Besides, I can’t go to the Pinnacle, remember? Mr. Sharpe made it crystal clear I wasn’t welcome on the premises.”

“But it’s my hotel,” I said. “If I want you to come over, what is Mr. Sharpe to do about it?”

“Ring the police, probably,” Mac replied.

I rolled my eyes. “So what?”

“So, I left the station of my own free will, and I’d like to not go back there on someone else’s whim.”

Huffing, I acquiesced. “Fine. Tell me what you found.”

“A book,” he said. “Hall’s high school yearbook. I think that’s what he wanted me to get. He talked in riddles, Evelyn. I’ll explain everything when you get here. You want the address?”

I copied his address down on a nearby pad of paper. Then I rolled the pen cap between my lips. “But how do I get there, Mac? Do I take a taxi? Do taxis go all the way to Yonkers?”

“If you got cash,” Mac said, “they’ll take you wherever you want to go. Or you could try the subway.”

“The subway?” I about fell off my chair. “I should think not! Can you imagine? This dress on the subway!”

“I don’t know what dress you’re wearing. But no, you’re right, I can’t picture you in the subway. So give the driver my address, and I’ll see you soon.”

He hung up on me. He hung up on me!

I stared at the phone in shock, not ready for the conversation to be over. I felt as if I’d lost an argument.

I had to go to Yonkers? On my own? On a Wednesday?

My stomach growled. I hadn’t even eaten yet!

I slammed the receiver down and hopped off the stool. Presley was a better clock than anything I wore around my wrist. He always knew when it was time to eat and was hot on my heels while I rifled through the pantry.

“Don’t have time to order food today, Presley. Looks like peanut butter and jelly for me and a can for you.
